Hi! I’m Caren, a student from BCIT New Media and Web Development program. I participated in a 4-week practicum placement at Free Agency Creative and here’s a review of my experience.
Perched on the top floor of 112 W Hastings in Gastown is Free Agency Creative, an advertising agency specializing in creating beautiful content for an array of clients. I was in search for a practicum placement for my final term at BCIT for the New Media and Web Development program, and I wanted to make the most out of it. Free Agency Creative was on the top of my list. After several emails and a night of anxious waiting, I was invited to the office for an interview. It was clear what my tasks would be during the two interviews. In full disclosure that my work at the company may not be completely glamourous, Evelyn and Tak wanted both parties to get the most out of this opportunity and I was eager to learn the processes of an agency.
During the first Monday, the essentials were supplied: Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, a personalized Google email, and a Macbook Pro. Everything was a little overwhelming at first, meeting the entire team, the pace of work, and in general, sitting in an office from 9 to 5. Throughout my internship, I had the opportunity to shadow the project manager and designers during team meetings, sit in on conference calls with clients and web developers, and participate in hands-on work. It was rewarding to know that the skills I learned in school was applicable to the real world environment, from using tools in the Adobe Creative Suite, applying social media strategies, and understanding web development. I had weekly meetings with Evelyn to check if I’m on track to meeting my personal goals and to receive feedback for my work. Everyone at FAC works at full steam, but as the team works hard they don’t forget to have fun - from trivia nights to Friday afternoon beer and snacks. FAC cherishes the culture they created in an unpretentious, inclusive work environment.
Personally, I value the active learning working here at Free Agency Creative. I was treated with respect, and assigned tasks like a real employee, and was never "just another intern".
